Welcome!
But what is all this?
With Bite is the brand new online home of Extra Teeth, the twice-yearly Scotland-based literary magazine which is, according to Stack, ‘redefining Scottish literature’.
You may know us already; having launched in 2019 with a successful Kickstarter, we’ve since published eight phenomenal issues of our print magazine and established a community of some of Scotland’s most exciting upcoming writers. You may have even been subscribed to our mailing list already; that list is now housed here, hence why you are receiving this email!
If you don’t yet know us: in two print issues a year, we publish the most exciting new writing from Scotland and beyond, alongside some of the great of Scottish literature, such as Michel Faber and Janice Galloway. Each issue’s visuals are defined by our guest artist, who is given free range to interpret and illustrate the twelve stories and essays as they see fit.
In April 2025, however, we are expanding – onto Substack.
While the magazine itself is strictly print only, With Bite gives us a new platform in which to introduce you to more new writing, to explore topics relevant to contemporary Scottish writing, to give you sneak peeks behind the scenes at Extra Teeth and to keep up with our current and former contributors who are going on to achieve incredible things. It creates an online space for all those who love Scottish literature – and wish to support it.
Posts will go out twice a month to paid subscribers, and will include brand new stories and essays not available in the magazine, as well as interviews, process posts, commentary and Q&As with industry insiders such as editors, agents and publicity teams. Free subscribers will receive occasional newsletter-style posts keeping you up to date with what’s going on at Extra Teeth HQ.
Paid subscribers also receive 20% off the print magazine, and 10% off anything on our website – including back issues, merch, and specially-commissioned artwork.
More than this, though, you’ll be supporting a truly independent small press magazine that is committed to transparent pay and good working conditions, to writer development and community support, and to making space for the weird, experimental and boldest writing from across Scotland and beyond.
The last few years have been extremely challenging for the arts in Scotland, especially tiny ones, and like many other small organisations we remain reliant on government funding and reader passion. By becoming a paid subscriber, you’ll be helping us to continue:
maintaining and raising our contributor and illustrator fees
paying the Real Living Wage to our team, and union rates for editing work
printing the magazine at our local printer in Glasgow, rather than a printer in England or abroad
offering free mentoring to upcoming and marginalised writers
paying performance fees at our events
running at-cost workshops for early career writers
running free Q&A sessions for early career writers
offering ongoing support to former contributors, in the form of advice (while navigating agents, publishers and so on), support letters, references and more
paying our submissions readers
championing new, brilliant Scottish writing that might not find a home elsewhere
Your support means the world to us, and helps us keep these little magazine going. We’ll see you for our first proper post in a week’s time!
